Veil
Veil is a short permissive license created for repositories that contain a mix of source code, graphics, audio, and documentation.
Standard software licenses use terms like "Software" or "binary execution" that do not fit non-code assets cleanly, while media licenses are rarely suitable for code. Veil uses the neutral term "Work" to cover every asset in a project under one license text.
Key Rules
The license relies on two simple rules:
- Non-misrepresentation: Prevents false claims of ownership or removing authorship history. It does not force downstream users to credit the author in UI screens, documentation, or marketing materials.
- Source notice retention: Keeps the license text inside editable source files for development and legal clarity. It avoids requiring users to ship the license text inside compiled binaries or rendered assets.
The disclaimer is written broadly to protect copyright holders, contributors, maintainers, distributors, and users alike from liability.
The full and original text of the license is available in examples/LICENSE.
